- Sony today confirmed that a PlayStation 5 VR kit is on the way.
- Unfortunately, the new device won’t land in 2021 and Sony had few details on it.
- Sony did reveal that the controls are inspired by the PS5’s DualSense controller and that it will connect with one cable to the PS5.
In 2016, Sony released the PlayStation VR. The headset worked with the then-current PlayStation 4 console and is now forward-compatible with the PS5. However, since it’s so old, it doesn’t have the greatest setup and its specs are outdated.

Today, though, Sony confirmed that a PlayStation 5 VR kit is in the works. It revealed a few key details about the device but kept a lot of the major points a secret.
Unfortunately, the company did confirm that we won’t see the VR headset launched in 2021. That’s probably alright, though, considering there are still swathes of people who have not been able to purchase a PS5 yet. Hopefully, by 2022, that won’t be the case anymore.
Sony PlayStation 5 VR: What we know so far
In Sony’s announcement, the company left out a lot of details. For instance, it didn’t even give the device a commercial name, simply referring to it as “the next-generation VR system.” Considering the original is called the PlayStation VR, it wouldn’t be out of the question for it to be the PlayStation VR 2. However, this isn’t confirmed as of yet.
Sony did confirm a few exciting things about the PlayStation 5 VR kit, though. It confirmed that the device will connect to the PS5 console with just one cable, which will definitely be convenient and a huge step up over the convoluted mess of the original system. It also confirmed that the controls for the headset will be inspired by the Sony DualSense controller. That likely means we can expect the same ultra-accurate haptic feedback of the PS5 controller, which is certainly exciting to us.
Other than that info, though, Sony is mum on further details. It’s likely we’ll learn more about the PlayStation 5 VR system as we get closer to 2022.
