Qualcomm is known to release only a single flagship chipset every year. The Snapdragon 855 SoC unveiled earlier this year has bagged an upgrade to further enhance the gaming and overall performance. Termed the Snapdragon 855 Plus, this chipset comes equipped with an overclocked CPU and GPU as compared to the standard Snapdragon 855.
The tri-cluster design of the eight-core Kryo 485 CPU on the Snapdragon 855 Plus sees your primary core running at a clock speed up to 2.96GHz instead of the 2.84GHz clock speed of a standard Snapdragon 855 chipset. The Adreno 640 GPU, on the other hand, have also been fine-tuned to offer a 15% increase in gaming performance. A massive improvement in gaming will soon be available for flagship devices.
This chipset will come baked with the Snapdragon X24 modem that supports LTE speeds, but will support the Snapdragon X50 modem for 5G connectivity onboard as well. There’s also the 4th-gen AI engine that’s capable of “more than 7 trillion operations per second,” says the Qualcomm blog post.
The Snapdragon 855 Plus also features improvements in the 5G, gaming, AI and VR/AR experience. Speaking of the improvements in Snapdragon 855 chipset, Kedar Kondap, VP of Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies Inc said that, “Snapdragon 855 Plus will raise the bar for elite gamers with the increase in CPU and GPU performance and elevate experiences for 5G, gaming, AI and XR, which is something our OEM customers look to us to deliver.”
I was expecting Qualcomm to reveal the phone maker who will be the first one to adopt this upgraded flagship chipset, but that’s not the case here. If I were to guess, we can expect the Snapdragon 855 Plus to power the Galaxy Note 10 5G variant and a myriad of gaming phones coming to the market. What are your thoughts on the same?
