Punjab: In suicide note, LPU Phagwara student ‘blames’ former professor in Kerala

A 21-year-old student from Kerala who was found dead in his hostel room at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab’s Phagwara has in a suicide note blamed a teacher from his previous institution for his decision to switch colleges, said officials Wednesday.

Phagwara Superintendent of Police Mukhtiar Singh said the situation is now under control at LPU, where students held a massive protest Tuesday afternoon on the campus as the news of his death spread. The protest at LPU came days after an agitation over leaked videos at the private Chandigarh University in Mohali.

Officials said the student, who had joined LPU two weeks ago from NIT (Calicut), has blamed a professor there for “emotionally manipulating” him into leaving the institution in the note. “I regret my decision so much, I am being a burden to everyone. I am sorry but this is it,” he said in the note, according to the police.

Aman Mittal, Vice-President, LPU, said, “The police are investigating the matter and from the suicide note recovered, the student has taken this extreme step because of the personal problems he faced in his previous institution at NIT Calicut (Kerala), where he studied for two years”.

“Yesterday, because of lack of information there was a misunderstanding among the other fellow students that led to unrest on the university campus late evening. The police and university authorities have clarified the whole situation to the students. Now, there is calm in the university, all students are now peacefully attending classes as well as taking examinations,” added Mittal.

He also said the university has a full-fledged counselling centre where any student having any issue can discuss instead of taking a such step which hurts everyone.

According to the police, the matter was brought to the notice of the Civil and Police Administration by LPU authorities on Tuesday evening. Civil and Police Administration officers reached the spot and carried out the preliminary investigation.

Phagwara Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jaspreet Singh had said earlier that the police recovered a suicide note allegedly written by the student. “We are investigating the matter further,” he added.

The parents of the student have been informed, who are reaching the university.

Earlier, LPU in said a statement the varsity fraternity is “saddened by the unfortunate incident”. “Initial investigation by the police and the contents of the suicide note point towards personal issues of the deceased. The University is providing full support to the authorities for further investigation. The University mourns the loss of the student and expresses its condolences to the bereaved family,” the statement posted on LPU’s official Twitter handle read.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha member Ashok Mittal is the Chancellor of the University, which is the largest varsity area-wise.
