Microsoft Surface Gaming Laptop: Questionable specification sheet leaks with 165 Hz display and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti –

Science & Technology

Earlier this month, reports emerged that Microsoft planned to release several new Surface-branded products at an autumn hardware event. While various sources claimed that the Surface Laptop 5, two versions of the Surface Pro 9 and the Surface Studio 3 are all ready, a new leak suggests that there could also be a fourth product in the pipeline. According to Prime Gaming, it has obtained a technical specification sheet for the Surface Gaming Laptop, which would be a new product line in the Microsoft Surface family.
Embedded below, the specification sheet presents the device as a 16-inch laptop powered by either the Intel Core i5-12500H and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti or the Core i7-12700H and the RTX 3070 Ti, plus a 165 Hz and 1440p display. Additionally, the specification sheet describes the device as featuring 16 GB or 32 GB of RAM with between 256 GB and 2 TB of storage, along with three USB Type-C ports that support USB 4.0 and Thunderbolt 4 functionality.
Predictably, the specification sheet describes the Surface Gaming Laptop as also containing a Surface Connect port, from which the laptop will recharge via a 102 W or 127 W power supply. These power supply details cast doubt on the authenticity of the specification sheet though, as do the references to LPDDR4x RAM rather than LPDDR5, Wi-Fi 6 instead of Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity. Specifically, the Surface Laptop Studio peaked at 97.3 W in our tests with a Core i7-11370H and an RTX 3050 Ti.
For reference, the Core i5-12500H has a 10 W higher TDP than the 35 W processors in the Surface Laptop Studio, while the RTX 3070 Ti has an 80 W minimum TGP. Hence, it seems that both Surface Gaming Laptop configurations would pull more from an outlet than their bundled power supplies are rated to supply. Although we have seen laptops like the Dell XPS 17 9720 doing this in our tests, this and other discrepancies mean that we would treat Prime Gaming’s report with scepticism for the time being.
