Johnson Controls Scoops Prize for Most Innovative Building Technology Globally – Johnson Controls

Science & Technology

Johnson Controls has been named as The Most Innovative Building Technology Brand in 2021 by Global Brands Magazine. It recognizes the company’s leadership in advancing smart, healthy and sustainable buildings around the world. Judges were particularly impressed with Johnson Controls’ commitment to helping to tackle the climate crisis, as buildings account for some 40% of greenhouse gas emissions.

The awards run annually by Global Brands Magazine look across industries, picking out companies standing out in their sector for how their story is resonating with the market. Johnson Controls is ranked as a technology leader alongside the likes of Apple, Microsoft and Intel – with a particular focus on how it is setting a compelling tone for the future of buildings.

ShivKumar, CEO of Global Brands Magazine, said: “We are very impressed by Johnson Controls ability to innovate and develop digital solutions such as OpenBlue for their customers. From constant innovation to setting the benchmark in the industry, Johnson Controls is committed to helping solve the climate crisis, supporting customers in cutting their carbon footprint through offerings such as OpenBlue Net Zero Buildings. We congratulate them and trust they continue to be trendsetters in the Building Technology sector.”

One Johnson Controls campaign that really caught the judges’ eyes was the OpenBlue Pioneers program, which showcases customers that are raising the bar on sustainability. One such pioneer was BEEAH, in the United Arab Emirates, a remarkable example of what can be achieved with visionary thinking. Featuring intelligent edge systems and software designed to optimize energy efficiency, the BEEAH Headquarters is one of the first fully AI-integrated buildings in the Middle East.

“This award underlines our position as the world’s leading pure-play buildings technology and solutions company and amplifies the stories we’re able to tell as a result,” said Phil Clement, chief marketing officer at Johnson Controls. “I am thrilled our team’s work is being recognized by Global Brands Magazine, as they looked far and wide at our competition and found our story and our technology the most compelling. This award is special.”

Another standout feature for the awards panel was the compelling way in which Johnson Controls was talking to the market about its OpenBlue Net Zero Advisor and real-time performance & reporting dashboards. Johnson Controls aims to deliver a solution that is purpose-built to analyze energy, water, materials and greenhouse gas emissions and help customers reduce resource use in real-time.

Johnson Controls is a first mover on climate change in the buildings sector, committing significant research and development efforts to tackling climate change and advancing sustainability. The company is leading the charge to cut its own emissions, support customers in their decarbonization journey and reducing emissions throughout their entire value chain. Aligning with the ambitious path of the Paris Climate Accord, the company adopted targets to reduce operational emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 55%, helping the planet stay at or below 1.5 degrees C, and aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2040, ten years ahead of Paris. For scope 3, the company is on track to support customers in cutting emissions by 16% and further, with its novel Net Zero as a Service offering, can provide customers with up front financing and guaranteed emission and utility cost savings.

Johnson Controls is taking on embodied carbon upstream in its production process and is committed to purchase at least 10% near net zero steel by 2040. Johnson Controls has also asked its suppliers to disclose their sustainability performance and has elevated sustainability scores to a par with cost and other key considerations for suppliers to be preferred providers. As the first industrial in the S&P 500 to put forward a Sustainable Finance Framework as well as issue three distinct green financial instruments, the company is clearly putting its money and its investments squarely behind a more sustainable future.
