Reaction from Moore and Johnson after a tough loss for Wales

Kieffer Moore and Brennan Johnson spoke after the match and both chose to highlight the positives from Wales’ performance today.

Moore said: “It was always going to be a hard game. They were very good tonight. We come away not so much disappointed – we will take positives out of it and go again on Sunday.”

Johnson said: “It was game of two halves, in the first we lacked belief and didn’t know what we could bring to the game. In the second half we had a different mentality and did ourselves proud.”

The two Welsh players also looked ahead to both Sunday’s crucial relegation tilt against Poland and the World Cup in November:

Moore said: “A win keeps us in the group so it’s full focus on Poland. I think we are in a good place, it’s our last home game before going to the World Cup so if we can leave on a high then great.”

Johnson said: “Rob (Page) told us to believe in ourselves at half time, we’re in a World Cup and Nations League’s Group A, we showed that in the second half. It’s a massive game on Sunday (against Poland), we want to be in this league and play the best teams in the world. We’ll be ready for it.”

De Bruyne’s post-game thoughts

Kevin De Bruyne’s performance was magnificent tonight, and he didn’t hold back with his comments after the game.

“I think we fully deserved to win, we dominated the first half and created a lot of chances. Wales were playing man to man so there were more options in the first half.

“Then we started the second half poorly, we have to keep the ball as Wales were playing so deep and wait for the right moments.”

De Bruyne was unhappy that Belgium’s penalty, which VAR disallowed, didn’t result in a Belgian corner, but rather a drop ball for Wales: “I was already running to the corner, the rules are so stupid though, it should then be a corner.”

Around the Nations League

Group 1 of League A was also in action today:

Croatia scored a go-ahead goal in the 79th minute, just two minutes after conceding an equaliser, to beat Denmark 2-1. Croatia’s win moved them into the top spot in the group, pole position for qualifying for the finals.

France meanwhile enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 home win over Austria, but they paid a price, losing Jules Kounde to injury. France’s win took them above Austria in the group table, taking them out of last place and the relegation zone ahead of Sunday’s final group fixtures.

Meunier prevents a counter, Roberto Martinez shown red card

90+4′ Belgium 2-1 Wales

Meunier is the last defender as Wales look to break forward after defending a Belgian corner, and he successfully slide tackles the ball out of bounds to stop Williams’ counter-attack.

Roberto Martinez then takes the ball as Wales look to get it back in play quickly with the Belgian defense out of position, and is sent packing for it. Thierry Henry takes over for Belgium.

Mertens gets the ball on the left wing inside the box and looks to curl a shot towards the far post, but just can’t curl it quite enough. That would’ve surely secured Belgium’s victory.
