The Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) come into their home opener against the Minnesota Vikings (1-0) after a hard-fought 38-35 victory over the Detroit Lions in Week 1. The Vikings come into this matchup after beating division foe Green Bay 23-7 in their home opener. This will make for a good game and a great test for both teams as both look to see where they stack up in the NFC.
Series Record: Eagles lead the series 10-7 at home.
Scouting Report | Vikings Offense
Under new Head Coach Kevin O’Connell, the Minnesota Vikings have an offensive-minded philosophy. It made itself known in Week 1 against the Packers as star receiver Justin Jefferson finished the game with nine receptions for 184 yards and two touchdowns. The run game was also active for the Vikings as Dalvin Cook ran for 4.5 yards per carry with 90 yards on 20 attempts. Cook also had three receptions for 18 yards from quarterback Kirk Cousins who looks renewed under the new coaching regime.
Scouting Report | Vikings Defense
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers came into last week’s game against the Minnesota Vikings having 13 touchdowns and zero interceptions in their last four matchups. This changed a bit as he managed only 195 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception on 22-for-34 passing against the Vikings’ defense.
Under Mike Zimmer, the defense was consistently solid. This was expected as he came into the position from being a defensive coordinator. With Kevin O’Connell having an offensive mentality, the defense – under new coordinator Ed Donatell, who was most recently the Broncos’ defensive coordinator – was a mystery. They have started to answer this question.
Against a strong offensive line in Green Bay, not to mention Rodgers, the Vikings were able to produce a strong showing. With four sacks, one interception, and one fumble recovery, Minnesota showed it will not just be an offensive team under O’Connell. This unit will be a good test for Philadelphia in its home opener.
Key stat: 4
The Eagles continued with their stellar run game in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions. The Philadelphia Eagles had four different players with a rush TD. Jalen Hurts started the action while Miles Sanders, Kenneth Gainwell, and Boston Scott also saw the end zone.
Key Opponent Injuries
CB Andrew Booth Jr. is out with a quad injury.
Marquee Matchup
One of the biggest factors in this game will be the ability of the Philadelphia secondary to contain the Minnesota Vikings’ wide receivers. Justin Jefferson and Adam Theilen are a real threat and the ability of James Bradberry and Darius Slay to match up with them will be vital.
