There are about 7,34,00,000 results for lawn bowls on search engines ever since the Indian women lawn bowls team created history at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Tuesday by winning a gold medal in the women’s fours format. The team, consisting of Rupa Rani Tirkey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia and Lovely Choubey, won the medal by beating South Africa. The game has garnered attention since the team clinched a gold medal in the game. Anju Luthra, manager of the gold winning team and Associate Professor at Jesus and Mary College, explains what the game is:
How to play lawn bowls?
In lawn bowling, the team has to get the bowl (the ball) closest to a target, which is known as the jack. The game can be played in singles, pairs,
triples, and fours competitions. “The bowler stands on the mat and rolls their bowl towards the jack and when the game is played in singles, there is no limit to the ends, whoever secures 21 points first will be declared the winner. There are two grounds for the game – synthetic and grass round, the ongoing matches are on grass ground,” says Anju Luthra, “End point in the game is called the jack, so if your balls are closer to the jack, then you get a point. The jack is not fixed. It depends on the player, sometimes the player takes it ahead, sometimes it goes in the ditch, if it goes out of the ground then it is brought back.”
Players stand on the mat and roll the bowl (the biased balls with which the game is played, and which are heavier to one side so that they move in a curved path) towards the jack. In fours events, each team member gets two bowls per round. Each round is called an end.

Rules of the game
In the fours (the version being played at CWG), each team gets eight throws in one end and one end means completion of one round. A team has to bowl 15 ends to complete the match. The team with more points after 15 ends wins the game. “Whoever draws the ball closest to the jack, that team scores the point. During the semi-final, the last shot that Rupa Rani Tirkey played, with one ball, we got four points. It means four of our balls were closest to the jack. Fitness is not really important here. The main thing is when you are releasing the ball, your accuracy and wrist movement is important,” she adds.

Lawn bowls has been part of CWG since inaugural edition
Though the country may be paying attention to the game recently after the team won a gold at the Games, it is in fact one of the oldest sports in the Commonwealth Games, and has featured in every edition since the inaugural edition in 1930. England has so far dominated the sport with 51 medals. Australia won five gold and two silver medals at the 2018 Gold Coast CWG. As for the India team, India lawn bowls teams took part in 2010, 2014, and 2018 editions of the Commonwealth Games before the 2022 event

Points are awarded at the conclusion of each end and is decided according to which team has their bowls closest to the jack. If team A has three bowls closer to the jack than team B’s closest bowl, team A will get three points. A box measure is used to measure the distance between the jack and the bowls
