EPL Best Bets Week 1 | Premier League Predictions & Bet Picks

Teams in the English top-flight hope to get the new season off to a good start and there could be some surprises in store in the opening weekend

Week 1 of a Premier League season allows any team to shock the world by exceeding or falling below expectations right out of the gate.

This also allows for the imagination of fans worldwide to dream about best-case scenarios for their favorite clubs while every team stands tied in the EPL table.

That said, enthusiasm sometimes leads to opportunity at the sportsbook, with odds impacted by overeager fans placing wagers on their home club. This environment should make for an exciting first week in Premier League football and betting.

EPL Best Bets for Week 1

As teams settle into their Premier League seasons, there will be early value while sportsbooks adapt.

Several talented underdogs are posted at long odds during the opening weekend while the opportunity is still available to profit off several favorites.

Here are some of my favorite best bets for Week 1 in the Premier League.

All odds are courtesy of BetMGM Sportsbook and current as of Tuesday, Aug. 2, as of 2 p.m. ET.

AFC Bournemouth vs. Aston Villa Best Bet

Aston Villa Win & OVER 2.5 Combined Goals (+210)

WAGER: 1 unit

Aston Villa did not lose a match during the preseason while playing Manchester United to a 2-2 draw, while AFC Bournemouth, fresh from their promotion from the Championship, has looked shaky at best in their lead-up to Premier League play.

Leon Bailey, Ollie Watkins, and Cameron Archer look to be in top form, with each scoring a pair of goals in the preseason for the Villans, who held the 10th-best goal differential in the Premier League last season. As a result, the club should have no issue reaching the net against the inexperienced Cherries.

Bet on Aston Villa to win while contributing to Over 2.5 total goals being tallied.

Leeds United vs. Wolverhampton Best Bet

Wolverhampton Win & UNDER 2.5 Combined Goals (+500)

WAGER: 1 unit

Leeds United enter the match against Wolverhampton as the clear favorite. However, this showdown will be a great deal closer than the sportsbooks seem to indicate.

Wolves finished last season with a 15-6-17 record (51 points) with a minus-5 goal differential, compared to Leeds, who posted a 9-11-18 record (38 points) with a minus-37 goal differential.

The match is being held at Elland Road, but Wolverhampton was clearly the better team last season, with Leeds losing key players such as Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha.

Expect a competitive match, but at +500, you should bet on the Wolves to win with a total of Under 2.5 combined goals.

Newcastle United vs. Nottingham Forest Best Bet

Newcastle wins (+155)

WAGER: 1 unit

Nottingham Forest is back in the Premier League for the first time since the 1998-99 season. This alone should paint them as an easy target in betting lines until they can prove they have the talent to hang with experienced teams at the next level.

Eddie Howe led the Magpies to within two points off a top-half finish last season after joining the team as manager in November. Newcastle secured a victory in six of their final eight matches and should take care of business at St. James’ Park on the backs of Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson.

Everton vs. Chelsea Best Bet

Chelsea: Win to Nil (+175)

WAGER: 1 unit

Chelsea enters as a heavy favorite on the road against an Everton side that is staring at another long season fighting off relegation.

A combination of goalkeeper Édouard Mendy along with center backs Kalidou Koulibaly and Thiago Silva will make things very difficult for the Toffees’ offense.

In fact, Mendy carried a 44.2% clean sheet rate, which ranked in the 95th percentile among Tier 1 European leagues last season, while Everton scored the eighth-fewest goals in the Premier League a season ago.

Bet on Chelsea to win their opening match on the road while keeping Everton off the board.
