Rugby league legends Rob Burrow and Steve Prescott have inspired the first-ever Rugby League Shirt Day, which has taken social media by storm today.

The Rugby Football League are supporting the initiative, which is held on Friday, September 23.

Fans and players are encouraged to show off a rugby league shirt of their chance on social media, nominating others to do the same as well as raising money and awareness for the MND Association and The Steve Prescott Foundation.

The fundraising idea is the brainchild of rugby league fanatics Bryan Cowin and Andy Lee.

“The day is the first of what will be an annual event, showcasing the popularity of rugby league,” the pair told Love Rugby League.

“Everyone within the game is aware of the stories of these two legends. We envisage the visual effect of shirts from all over the world will help raise awareness of two amazing charities.

“The awareness is growing rapidly and with so many organisations coming on board it promises to be a great day all round for both the charities and rugby league in general.

“We are encouraging fans nationwide to take part by wearing their favourite rugby league shirt, sharing a selfie on social media; and, if possible, donating whatever you can afford.

“Simply wear your shirt into work, if you are allowed, or anywhere that will help raise awareness.”
