Akshay Kumar Blasts Reporter For Sexist Question About Women

Trends

At a recent interaction with the press for promotions of his upcoming film Raksha Bandhan, actor Akshay Kumar schooled a journalist for asking about his experience dealing with women’s ‘sweet tantrums’ on the sets of the film.

Raksha Bandhan has been the talk of the town ever since the release of its trailer.

The movie follows the story of a businessman who vows to get his four sisters married before his own marriage to his girlfriend, played by Bhumi Pednekar.

Playing the role of Akshay Kumar’s sisters in the film are Sahejmeen Kaur, Deepika Khanna, Sadia Khateeb and Smrithi Srikanth.

On Tuesday, at the trailer launch event for Raksha Bandhan, a journalist asked Akshay about his experience working with his five female co-stars.

It would have been fine if the question had been limited to that, however, the member of the press went a step further and unfortunately alluded to outdated stereotypes of all women having ‘sweet tantrums’.

An utterly amused Akshay lambasted the reporter, saying that he had not seen any of his women co-stars throwing any sort of tantrums on the sets of Raksha Bandhan.

“You are the only man that can be seen in the trailer, with four sisters and Bhumi. When you film with women, they have these sweet tantrums. To kis tarike se aapko jhelne pade chaaron ke aur Bhumi ke (How did you manage to tolerate the tantrums of the four sisters and Bhumi)?”, the reporter asked Akshay.

Perhaps in a bid to cut the tension, Bhumi laughed at the question, but Akshay lambasted the reporter, “Sabse pehle tu ye bata kaunsi ladki ke saath ghumta hai tu ki tantrums hote hain (First of all tell me who are you hanging out with where she throws these tantrums).”

The Khiladi wasn’t done, as he continued,  “Mere ko to koi tantrum nazar nahi aaya inka. Koi sweet veet koi tantrum nahi. Mujhe to bada hi normal laga. Tune kaun se tantrum jhelein hain. Aisa koi tantrum nhi tha inlogo ke saath. Maze karne aaye the maze karke chale gaye (I didn’t see any kind of tantrums, be it sweet, from either of them. I found everything very normal. What kind of tantrums did you have to suffer. I didn’t see any tantrums with them, we were there to have fun and we did that and left).”

Akshay Kumar’s response is a welcome change in an industry where casual sexism is often normalised to an extent that members of the press often get away with asking such intrusive, inane, and downright insulting questions.

It’s a lesson for all journalists and reporters to avoid such faux pas in the future by looking inwards and putting in the work to get rid of such outdated and frankly noxious beliefs.

Raksha Bandhan, slated for an August 11 release, pairs Akshay Kumar with Atrangi re Director Aanand L Rai.

If the movie were to, unfortunately, tank at the box office, it would mean that Akshay would have managed to achieve a hattrick of hoodoos in 2022, following the failures of Bachchhan Paandey and Samrat Prithviraj, which were released this year.
